Vikings fly majestically over a luscious forest. Scrumptious
The original Starcraft is still one of the most heavily played online games of all time, especially in Korea where tournaments are held on channels practically dedicated to the game. So it came as no surprise several months ago when, after over a decade since Starcraft, Blizzard announced a sequel. We haven't had much in the way of information since then, but during Blizzcon we've been fed a tastey load of info and screenshots. Now we have some news on the Terran side of things.

The first thing to mention is a brand new Terran unit known as the Viking (you can see them in action to the left). The Terran have always had fantastic static defences, but when it comes to anti air, Turrets are immobile and Goliaths are slow and bulky. Now the Terran have an ace up their sleeves. The Viking is more like a Transformer. It can turn into a powerful jet fighter or an assault walker to maximise its potential in any battle situation. Not only this, but they can exploit a poorly varied enemy force. Against a strong ground unit it can flip into it's jet mode and against anti air defences it can turn into its assault walker form. This makes it difficult to gith unprepared. Fortunately, (for when you're up against them) their flying speed does not compare to the Wraith, so raids are a little more difficult to pull off.

"Warp Rays make short work of buildings"

Archons reign hell on these unsuspecting Terrans
The Marines have seen little change. They still have their basic gauss rifles with the possibility for the U388 upgrade to increase their range. Stim packs are also still available to give your Marines the edge in tight situations. Ghosts are deadly as ever with their invisibility cloaks and ability to call down phenomenally powerful nukes, which look even more impressive this time around.

A Twilight Archon
Finally, the Reaper which was unveiled along with Starcraft II appears to be like a Marine on crack. Their jetpacks make manoeuvring across complex terrain very simple making them very powerful at raiding bases where an enemy would not expect them to be able to reach. We also have a brand new Protoss unit; the Twilight Archon. High Templars are the masters of the Protoss' psionic abilities, and when you merge 2 of them, you get a Twilight Archon. Their power is virtually unmatched on the battlefield and just a few of them can plough through an entire army.

That looks quite nice for an RTS game. Note that I'm not the biggest RTS fan in the history of the universe, so I don't know a lot about them. In fact, post-C&C: Red Alert 2 (mental game!), I don't know fuck all about them. I know there was a Starcraft on the N64. What's so special about Starcraft, Grazza?

If my 360 dies outside warranty I'll gut it and use it to incubate ostrich eggs.

It's got to be the most balanced RTS ever. There are no easy win strategies (although it's a shame that a lot of professional matches end in rushes). Also, the custom maps are pure sex. Games like turret defence....I must have played for hundreds of hours. I dunno really, I'm a Starcraft fanboy. I've never liked WC3, especially how it looks. Shitty 3d <<<<<<< Beautiful prerendered 2d.

I know Grumbler will totally disagree with me on this :P

But, those screens look 3D?

They are....I'm talking about the original Starcraft.

Starcraft:

Runs lightning fast even with hundreds of units on screen. Online has little to no lag as well, battlenet kicks arse.

Aren't they releasing it on 360? (They seem to be doing that a fair amount with other games such as Halo wars, that LOTR one)

knighty @ August 11, 2007, 11:57 am
That works for them because they were designed around the 360. Starcraft requires way too much micro-management to use anything other than a mouse.

I would invest in Korean computer companies if I had any money. This is going to be fucking huge.

Perhaps a mouse as a 360 peripheral? Just thinking out loud. Even if this comes out on consoles, it is definitely one to get on the PC, if you can possibly help it.

That would be a good idea Oni. Really do hate playing games on PC. Need an HDTV to play it on the 360 DEFINITELY though.

It shouldn't even be a big deal having compatibility for generic mice and keyboards on modern consoles. You can use most normal (non-install) USB mice and keyboards on the PS2, so I can't understand why it's still even an issue on the new wave of machines. If you can can just plug most generic PC mice and keyboards into a PS2 and have it work, then it should just be a standard feature on all consoles, by now.

Especialy on the 360, considering it basically is a PC...

Hell, even the Wii has (limited) keyboard support.

But the PS2 was so popular that anything would sell. Hence it has more peripherals than an ugly girl.

Because everyone has a look at an ugly bird and thinks...

"look at that keyboard"

You mean it's just me?

Living in Aberdeen, I think that a lot.
