Oh hi
Some of you will remember a bizarre PC game called Pathologic which I and a few others on here delved briefly into a while back. It was an extremely ambitious, interesting and unique high-concept Russian arthouse game, sadly put together without the necessary resources to make it more approachable in a way that one would a normal game. Read more about it here.

Well, the developers of that game, Ice-Pick Lodge, are it seems very close to releasing their second game. Tension is another conglomeration of genres, some kind of surreal action adventure with... dating elements... in which you draw symbols with coloured stuff to make stuff happen, under constant resource scarcity (a big parallel with Pathologic).

It's out in Russian this month, and from what I can tell is due to be released in English at some point, so I'll be keeping an eye on it. For now, here's a selection of information and images and videos which will not increase your understanding of the game very much...

Tension – a survival adventure game, in which you have to stay alive in the hostile world of Void and to get out from it as quick as possible. The choice is either to support life in its horrifying Hunters or its mournful girls or strip them of it. The way you pass through The Void is the way it changes. The way it reflects upon you.

The surrealistic world of Tension is based on a single resource that grants the ability to live and act – Lympha. Each color of Lympha possesses its own character and unique properties – both useful and dangerous. Only Lympha gives life, but it can take it back as well. Hunters’ blood, captured creature, gracious girls, tree brought to life, just everything is the source of Lympha. Any action you take: battling an enemy, talking to a Sister, hunting, searching, traveling – the price in exchange is Lympha.

The dynamic, interactive environment and the severe resource shortage constantly put the player into unexpected circumstances. Although the player is free to use any colors any time he should mind his global strategy, since the finale will turn out the way the world is painted. The gameplay in Tension is non-linear the ending (one of the 11) depends on the color and the amount of Lympha used.

Features:

-Lympha – the unified resource: the currency, the hero’s health, armory and inventory, the character’s stat system and the world settings.
-All the actions are done via drawing by Lympha. The amount of Lympha used influences the effectiveness of the result.
-7 colors of Lympha are of the same value of nutrition, but produce a different effect in the same situations, if used.
-Each color of Lympha can benefit and each can harm. The player can take advantage of a color, though even a drop of any color can change the world of the Gap.

Certainly sounds interesting... Definitely better graphically than Pathologic too. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't get more into Pathologic, but I guess this'll give me another chance

'twas a good read. Makes part of me want to play Pathologic again, just like going home and seeing the box sitting next to our awful computer and thinking 'Maybe it'll actually run properly on my new one' did. But I know I wouldn't finish it... Or if I did I'd have to play the whole thing through with the walkthrough, and I'd hate to do that.

That article mentioned how the game keeps things from you and I just couldn't stand that. I'm the kind of person who has to take every path in a game, go into every room and look in every box even if I know that what's in there will be completely useless, or that there probably won't be anything in there at all...

Playing Oblivion at the moment, and the thought that I might not ever find, let alone explore, half of the caves or forts just annoys me... It's actually painful every time I find a cave and just have to walk on past it because I've got somewhere else to be.

That was practically all I ever did when playing Pathologic... I also didn't like how dead the town felt, though I can't really criticise it for that because that's how it's supposed to be. Same with how difficult/impossible it was to stay fed and healthy. It's annoying that so many of the things that annoy me about the game were done intentionally, but I guess maybe the game wasn't supposed to be enjoyable in that way. Pfft... I can never understand those artsy peoples

Anyway, realised I didn't actually get a chance to watch the whole of the Tension video before, so I did and saw some of the gameplay. Certainly looks interesting. Possibly a bit more 'game-like' than Pathologic was, which I can see myself enjoying far more. I like the look of it too, seems like they decided to turn the Surreal up to 11 for this one. Bits of it kinda remind me of Bioshock too for some reason...

Oh and the video says it's no longer available for some reason. Not sure why, going on the menu and following the URL to the actual video works fine...

It cranks open the horrible bitter debate about whether games need to be fun (Schindlers List is always the film equivalent example used) which to most people seems absolutely ridiculous.

And I agree with them, I reckon Pathologic could have been made much more enjoyable whilst maintaining the vast majority of what it's trying to do. I don't think it's very comparable to Schindler's List at all.

I think I would have stuck with it longer if the survival was a bit more toned down. Having to constantly eat and drink (More than I probably do in real life even...) was just such a chore, and it didn't help that money and food were so hard to come by. Not too much mind, otherwise the game wouldn't have been the same, but enough to make it seem less like the developers HATED you...

The thing that put me off the most was the walking speed. If they'd just stuck to a few more unrealistic conventions like letting you run all the time it would have been a lot better.

Oh Gawd, yeah... Especially when you were always so short of time to get everything done by the end of the day. I often ended up looking at the map for a while before leaving anywhere so I could plan the quickest route to wherever I was going, and stop at as many of the other places I needed to go along the way...

Ice-Pick eh sounds like the name of some shitty rapper.

Game looks pretty weird.
