So, as I've said, I'm recoding the whole of w8 from scratch as it's become a mangled mess of spaghetti code and is impossible to work on. I've decided on a redesign too as I don't think the current design is going to hold up as looking good for very long. It's too square, there isn't any contrast and it's cluttered as hell.

So after about 15 attempts at a redesign over the past 2 days I've come up with this.

Not a huge layout change just a style change. Thoughts? (Bare in mind this is all going to take some time to do, I'll be creating a new folder while the recode is done which I'll post here when it gets going)

Go for it.

I think you should do a W8 redesign timeline. I love looking at the Internet Archive and seeing ancient websites.

You should take the whole site down and put this gif:

Like it's 1997.

Very nice knighty. Make this a new start for W8. Very talented bunch of writers we have here that need more exposure. Site needs to be promoted! I'll do my bit.

No, this is the image you should use.

Or this one.

Loving the layout. It looks more smooth and there's a better selection of colours IMO. Can't wait to see it live.

Looks good. I do prefer the black of the current style over the new lighter colours.

And fate is setting up the chessboard while death rolls out the dice. Anyone for tennis, wouldn't that be nice?

Working version

This is where I'll be doing my work on the site, feel free to pop in whenever and have a gander. Not much done yet, and expect errors. The site may be permanently moving to that location if Joe can't upgrade to php5 on this server because of his silly clients

What's the consensus on the new comment boxes?

Do you think they should show your signature? I think it clutters things up too much for comments.

I was in favour of adding sigs to comments before, when they weren't there, but yeah I don't really think they're needed on comments.

And I dunno why, but the avatars do look huge for some reason. Not sure why, they're the exact same size as before aren't they?

Click

Feel free to login and play around with the ajax.

New stuff then:
Adding comments uses AJAX
Editing comments uses AJAX
Deleting comments uses AJAX
Who's Online box refreshes every 20 seconds
Gallery page is done
Changed image popup script to use lightbox because I think it's prettier (and it's more lightweight)

Images aren't showing in Opera. But it's looking really sexy, I think. Even the recent media on the left looks really snug, and usually a group of different sized images looks poo. Great.

Imma have to download Opera then. I've only been testing FF and IE. Cheers.

Clicky

What's the consensus on the BBCode formatting bar (it doesn't do anything yet!)

Try logging in/out too

btw if you get any errors related to ending threads it's nothing I can fix yet but I am aware.

Nice look and stuff needs a little black.
u really need to get a PM system working
the ajax popup thing doesn't work.

There's been a problem with the host over the past 15 hours or so which is why it is slow.
What ajax popup?
Yes I am going to do a PM system but the forum is bottom of the list at the moment (because it's a humongous job).
